Black Women With Style: Jenni Lovette

How did you get started?

I began making pieces for co-workers on my job back in '07. I finally decided in August of 2009 that this is what I wanted to do. I had so much support from my friends and family, I p
ushed my fears aside and launched SewFunky. I have since then made a change to my name in order to expand my design range and I'm loving the response from the ladies who have been with me from the start, as well as the newbies.

Have you always been interested in designing?

Yes, I have. I think that deep down, I always knew that I would be a designer. The desire started with clothing and then I realized no piece of clothing is complete without dope accessories.

What motivate
s/inspires you?
I love this question because the same things that inspire me also define me as an artist. My inspiration comes from the love that I receive, music, positivity, abstract art, beautiful people and personalities. Lately, I've been spending more time with my mini me's admiring nature. Things that we sometimes take for granted. The greens, blues, browns, just so much to build on. You'll be seeing
more of this inspiration in my new pieces due to be on the scene in July.

What are
your favorite pieces?

Right now my f
ave
pieces are my peek-a-boo earring, the broochlace, and the regal bracelet. All of these are a direct reflection of my

design personali
ty. Edgy, feminine, eye-catching, but still a little mysterious. You can find them in my online boutique as
well.

Do you have a team or is it an one woman show?
I am indeed a team of one. I email, promote, order supplies, design, glue, sew, manage inventory, file, package, ship, etc. I am my own custom
er service rep. I'm actually in the process of finding a personal assistant to help with a few things. She's gonna be a monster after this experience :)

Your jewelry
is fashion forward and cutting edge, where do you pull ideas from?

My ideas come from my dreams, imagination, and sometimes, my accidents. I can't tell you how many times I've started with a bracelet and it became a necklace and vice versa. Nothing is new under the sun, but with every piece that I create, I try to add my own little twist so that it won't be confused with the same old, same old.

A quote to live by.

“I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is.” ~Albert Camus
