Does the Natural Hair Community take hair...too seriously?

Think about it, for those of you who who have had relaxers, did you ever worry about your hair half as much as you do now? I can honestly say I didn't. I was a creamy crack applying, curling iron abusing, change my hair color every two weeks type of girl. I WAS LIVING MY LIFE. I never worried about drying gels, the newest natural products or which shampoo and conditioners were paraben free. I think that as a community, we care entirely too much about our hair to enjoy. We're so worried about the effects of everything that touches our hair, that we aren't appreciating the beauty of it. Now don't get me wrong, taking care of your hair is important, but don't let it become a burden. I can name a few nights where twisting my hair would seem like the worse punishment ever, ESPECIALLY if I had to detangle after a wash. And we all wish for length, until we get it and realize we can no longer do the wake up "splash and go". And please don't get started on the never ending list of pros and cons if you choose to color. Where is the fun in natural hair? Has it become another burden? Did we take all of the simplicity out of our afro's and locs and replaced it with complexity?? What do you think?

I agree! Other naturals do take there hair too seriously! But I actually like the fact that I pay attention to what I put in my hair. It's fun to me but I don't go overboard! I still have fun with my hair too. Coloring it and all. I'm just more cautious now that I'm natural. I also don't care about length. I have tons of styles I plan on trying, so I can't deal with length right now. I grow it, just to cut it. No big deal. This whole natural thing is just so much fun too me, being too serious about it would ruin that!

i used to back when i first BCd now (im a year and 7 months natural)its less bothersome. I know what works...I know what styles i like. Now I mostly look at pictures for inspiration

def agree. when I did my first BC I was obsessed with researching and caring for my hair the "proper" way. Now, I'm carefree and less obsessive, as long as I water it each day, I'm good. And i see my hair as self expression instead of a goal of length and beauty

For sure! I agree with what everyone has said so far. When you first start out, it's a hassle, especially when you do the BC. It's a struggle as you begin to know your hair. But once you become used to it, it gets a whoooole lot easier and you can worry a lot less about what you can and cannot do to your hair.
