Kinky hair, set STRAIGHT

I love my natural hair, I've learned to embrace it. But sometimes the community confuses me. I'm sure we've all met the headstrong natural Nubian queens whose opinions cannot in any form be swayed. I've met them, and while all opinions are always welcomed, some of them seem a little closed minded. I decided to put my personal opinion out there with reasons behind each one:

  • Just because a woman isn't natural, doesn't mean she doesn't love or embrace her natural beauty. Becoming natural has helped numerous women see the beauty in themselves and even beyond what the eyes see. It's the journey does this. Some women can see these things within themselves without going natural, it's okay. We are all different.
  • If you straighten your hair with heat, it isn't natural. Why not? There aren't any chemicals in the hair, still natural to me. Some people go natural because they want the variety that comes with it, not just to rock an afro or poetic justice braids. My reason for going natural was because I got tired of having more hair in my hands than I did on my head.
  • Wearing my hair natural does not mean I am in any type of revolutionary activist political group, or vegan, or a tree hugger. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these things. But making the general assumption that all women that are natural are like this can be offensive... oh and guess what, we shave our armpits too.
This is just to show that we are not the same. We all live different lifestyles and chose or didn't choose to go natural for mini reasons. We all have different opinions, but an open mind is always the best way to approach any situation.
